The authorities in Iran on Thursday denied arresting 70 academics following a meeting with opposition leader Mir-Hossein Moussavi, as the tense post-election standoff continued in the capital Tehran. The Fars news agency quoted an informed official as saying that no academic had been arrested, but that 'some officials of the prosecutor-general's office had some talks with the academics after the meeting' with Moussavi.
The official alleged that earlier reports were false and contributed to foreign media spreading misinformation about Iran's domestic situation. Moussavi's website said 70 scholars, all members of the Islamic Associations of their universities, were arrested after Wednesday's meeting with Moussavi and taken to an unknown destination.
